As an interface for the transformation of research and development in Macau, we rely on the expertise, experience and research capabilities of UM experts and scholars, as well as the research strengths of the faculties and institutes of our strengths. We are committed to extending the influence of UM’s research achievements to various industries. UM adopts the strategies in scientific research that highlights its unique features, leverages its advantages, builds excellence and enhances collaboration. It is problem-oriented and focusing on supporting disciplines with Macau's characteristics and aligning with international development trends. This forms the backbone of our research strategy, known as the“3+3+3+3” model, which includes:

(1) Full support for the construction of the three State Key Laboratories (University of Macau)

  • State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine
  • State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI
  • State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City

(2) Actively supporting new research growth points and focusing on the development of three emerging directions

  • Precision Medicine
  • Advanced Materials
  • Regional Oceanography

(3) Established the Institute of Collaborative Innovation (ICI) with three cross-disciplinary research centers

  • Artificial Intelligence and Robotics
  • Data Science
  • Cognitive and Brain Sciences

(4) Establishment of three humanities and social sciences research platforms

  • Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Center for Macau Studies
  • Asia-Pacific Academy of Economics and Management

In addition, UM’s international influence has been growing in recent years. Currently, ten disciplines have entered the top 1% of the ESI, the world's leading database of essential science indicators, including Engineering, Computer Science, Chemistry, Materials Science, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Psychiatry/Psychology, Biology and Biochemistry, Clinical Medicine, General Theory of Social Sciences, and Agricultural Science. These leading research disciplines and their faculties support the University's academic and research strengths and international reputation.

Through UM's diverse research platforms in various fields, we believe that the business community and different organizations can work together to explore various possibilities of collaboration through innovative models, such as joint applications for industry-academia-research collaborations, in order to promote the transfer of research achievements to the industry and create productivity.
